Poetic Cuts Barber Shop owner Andrew Miller was driving around High Springs and noticed that in every direction he looked, there were signs in front of businesses looking to hire.

“I saw a Facebook post about 40 jobs available, and then while driving around I saw “Now Hiring” signs all over High Springs,” he said. “People need to get out and work now that everything is coming to a close with this pandemic.”

Miller decided to do something about it. He came up with the idea of a local job fair would help bring local job seekers and employers together. Miller pitched the idea to the High Springs recreation director Damon Messina, who contacted the High Springs Chamber of Commerce, and now a job fair is scheduled for June 22.

The event is a joint effort between the city and Radiant Life World/Hilife Projects Inc., the new owners of Pink Flamingo Diner, Great Outdoors Restaurant and other local businesses.

From 10 am. to 3 p.m. next Tuesday, June 22, employers and Deborah Simone, Radiant Life World’s human resources manager, will help people find jobs.

“It’s a group effort,” said Simone, who will be on hand to help job seekers spruce up their resumes and print them out on the spot from 10 a.m. to noon.

Simone is working closely with Sharon Decker, president of the High Springs Chamber of Commerce, to transform the High Springs Civic Center into a career resource center for the day, complete with coffee and donuts for attendees.

The Pink Flamingo Diner is donating coffee, High Springs Parks and Recreation is donating water, and Celebration Catering from Gainesville is providing table covers, while the city is lending the civic center space for free. Miller will be there with donuts as well, he said.

So far Simone said employers scheduled to attend are Bev’s Better Burgers, Wilkerson Welding, Inc., Holiday Inn Express and Suites in Alachua, The WORKs, Inc., the Great Outdoors Restaurant, Pink Flamingo Diner, Poetic Cuts, Woodscapes Interiors, North Central Florida Air Conditioning, Whitfield Window & Door, Inc., the state of Florida family services, Advance Auto Parts, Heavy Equipment Colleges of America, and Building Dreams Early Learning Center.

Companies interested in participating in the event can reach out to Simone at 386-418-3542 or deborah@radiantworld.com.

Earlier this month the Greater Gainesville Chamber reported that Alachua County had more than 10,700 job openings. As of Monday, High Springs had 124 open positions.
