Crews from Gainesville Fire Rescue stations 1, 3, and 5 all responded to a report of a house fire at the 900 block of NW 10th Street yesterday at approximately 5:13 pm.
The first arriving crews reported heavy smoke coming from the eves of the home. In total, 28 firefighters responded to the scene to assist in extinguishing and investigating the fire. Arriving crews conducted an interior offensive fire attack to combat the fire located primarily in the kitchen and attic space above.
The fire attack was hampered by the building layout, a residential multiplex, and construction type which allowed the fire to spread to void spaces that were difficult for crews to access. Arriving engines attacked the fire from inside the structure while tower and created a vent opening in the roof to expel the super-heated gasses and smoke.
All occupants were able to exit the home without injury. No injuries were sustained by the crews on scene.
The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Working smoke alarms are integral to provide occupants early warning to the presence of fire and deadly smoke. Be vigilant and check your smoke detector batteries twice a year during daylight savings!!
