If you live in Gainesville and want to vote in next month’s election, time is running out to register.

The city is holding an election for two Gainesville City Commission seats on March 16. All residents within Gainesville city limits can vote on at least one of the seats, if they register by Feb. 16.

Voters in the District 1 race must be residents of the district, which covers much of east Gainesville (map here). Voters for the at-large seat can live anywhere within the city limits.

The city provides three ways to register to vote:

  • Online at RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov
  • In person at the Alachua County Supervisor of Elections’ office, located in Gainesville at 515 N. Main St., Suite 300. It’s open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. There is an after-hours dropbox outside the office’s main entrance. Residents can also drop off completed registration forms at any Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles office or Alachua County Library District branch.
  • By mail: Fill out forms at VoteAlachua.com and have them postmarked no later than Feb. 16.

Early voting begins March 5 and will run until March 13.

Two candidates have qualified for each race. Incumbent Gigi Simmons and challenger Desmon Duncan-Walker will face off for the District 1 seat, while incumbent Gail Johnson will take on challenger Gabe Kaimowitz (also known as Gabriel Hillel) for an at-large seat.
