The voter registration deadline for the upcoming City of Gainesville’s special runoff election is Monday, Dec. 27.

The runoff election will take place on Jan. 25 between Cynthia Chestnut and Matt Howland for an at-large seat on the Gainesville City Commission, following a Nov. 16 special election that featured five candidates with none earning the needed majority (50 percent plus one) of votes to win. The top two candidates advanced to the runoff election.

Chestnut received 5,400 votes (46.06 percent) of the 11,725 votes cast in the Nov. 16 special election while Howland had 4,840 (41.28 percent). The at-large commission seat became available when former Gainesville Commissioner Gail Johnson resigned on Aug. 23.
