Newberry gets early voting site for 2022 election

A boom in housing in the Newberry and Jonesville area is the catalyst for establishing an additional early voting site for the 2022 general election.

Alachua County Supervisor of Elections Kim Barton made the announcement at the Alachua Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting on Tuesday.

“There’s so much growth in the Jonesville/Newberry area we just knew, sooner or later, we were going to have to add another early voting site,” she said.

The new site will be the main office building at the Alachua County Agriculture and Equestrian Center, located at 23100 W Newberry Rd.

Barton said the location meets all of the requirements for a polling site, and since it is owned by Alachua County, it is an ideal choice.

“There’s easy access for people to come from Newberry and Jonesville,” Barton said.

Barton noted the space is both ADA compliant and comes with ample parking space.

“It’s a great site for those that live out in that area so they don’t have to come to Gainesville or go to Alachua,” Barton said.

This will be the one of seven places Alachua County voters can use, and it will be set up for two weeks during the next general election in November 2022.

The other locations to early vote in Alachua County are at the elections office on Main Street in Gainesville, at the Millhopper and Tower Road branch libraries, Legacy Park in Alachua, the Reitz Union at UF and Orange Heights Baptist Church.

Barton said that 54,709 early votes were cast in the 2020 general elections and added that 61,956 registered voters utilized vote by mail and 27,164 voters went to the polls to vote in person. The total voter turnout was 143,829 out of 190,451 registered voters.
