New COVID-19 cases in Florida falls below 5,000

For the second straight day, the measurable statistics of COVID-19 in Florida decreased.

The Florida Department of Health reported 4,752 new cases to the Florida COVID-19 Dashboard, bringing the total positive test count to 491,884 cases as of the August 2nd report. This is the ninth straight day Florida has reported under 10,000 new cases, and the first day since June 22nd it has fallen under 5,000.

The FDOH also reported 60,994 new tests from Sunday. The positivity rate was 9.09% of the total, according to the report. Since July 16th, the positivity rate has stayed below 15%, and has been below 10% two days in a row.

7,157 people have died from the virus in Florida, an increase of 73, which is the second straight day under 100.

When the FDOH reports a death in the daily update, the number encompasses several days, with actual days of death occurring weeks prior in some cases. The state maintains a chart of actual days of death on its COVID dashboard showing the deadliest days as July 17 with 134 fatalities, but also more than 100 deaths each day between July 7-23.

216 new hospitalizations were reported Sunday bringing the total to 27,366 people in Florida that have been hospitalized at some point during the coronavirus pandemic. The high was set on Monday with 587.

Across Florida, 7,992 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 as of 11 am.

Columbia County is at 2,598  – up 26 from yesterday.
Dixie County is at 277  ­– up 5 from yesterday

Levy County is at 618  – up 23 from yesterday.

Archer 71 – up 1 from yesterday.
Hawthorne  61 – no change from yesterday.
High Springs 77 – up 2 from yesterday.
