Former Union County football great takes on new coaching role at Clemson

Last week the University of Clemson football team added former Union County High School star running back C.J. Spiller to its coaching staff.

Spiller will be a graduate intern with the Tigers as he works toward his Masters’ degree.

The 2009 ACC player of the year was the ninth pick overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 2010 NFL Draft.

At Clemson, Spiller rushed for 3,547 yards and 32 TD’s, had 120 receptions for 1,362 yards and 11 TD’s and also had eight TD’s from kickoff and punt returns during his four year career.

During his eight seasons in the NFL, Spiller played for five teams, and rushed for 3,451 yards and 12 TD’s, caught 198 passes for 1,362 yards and 11 TD’s. 

Spiller, who was born in Lake Butler, excelled at track and basketball, as well as football. During his senior year he rushed for 1,840 yards on 176 carries for 30 touchdowns. He also had fifteen receptions for 249 yards.

For his career at UCHS, he rushed for 5,511 yards on 541 carries. He was ranked the number one player in Florida, number one all-purpose running back, and number nine overall player by Rivals.com, and a First-team Parade magazine All-American.

In 2006, he was named All-First Coast boys track and field athlete of the year by The Florida Times-Union after winning FHSAA Class 2A state titles in the 100 and 200 meters.
