High School Basketball: Hawthorne girls rolling again; Buchholz boys lose opener

Last night, the defending 1A state champion Hawthorne girls basketball team moved to 2-0 with a 69-20 win at home against Hilliard.  The Lady Hornets return three starters from last year’s team which finished 29-2 under head coach Cornelius Ingram. Ingram is pulling double duty this week as his football team plays at Wildwood on Friday in the Class 1A-Region 4 Final.

In boys basketball, the Buchholz Bobcats opened up the season with a close 49-47 loss at Ridgeview (Orange Park) in the debut of new head coach George Atohi.  Tyler Gainey led the Bobcats with 12 points.  Buchholz is off until next Tuesday when the ‘Cats host Santa Fe (Alachua).

Gainesville High was supposed to host Vanguard (Ocala) tonight in the season opener for both teams. However, late yesterday afternoon Vanguard announced that all basketball activities have been shut down for the next seven days due to Covid.  The Knights will re-evaluate on November 30th.  GHS & Vanguard are hoping to reschedule the game.
