Third hit-and-run incident in Gainesville in three days leaves jogger critically injured

Officers from the Gainesville Police Department responded to a hit and run incident on Thursday at the 500 block of SE Williston Road in Gainesville. 

It was the third hit and run incident in Gainesville in three days.

According to the GPD statement, after arriving on the scene, GPD officers discovered a victim that was hit by an unknown vehicle in the crosswalk.

The  victim, a 35-year old female, was traveling east on the Hawthorne Trail, jogging with a friend who was on a bicycle. When the victim started into the crosswalk and went into the median lane, a dark colored SUV (make unknown) struck  her.

The SUV slowed for a moment and then picked up speed and fled south on SE Williston Road. The victim was  transported to Shands, where she remains in critical condition.  

GPD reminds motorists that if you are involved in an accident, you have a duty to stop. It is a criminal offense if you flee the scene of an accident, whether personal injury or property damage occurred.

On Wednesday, a University of Florida student was struck by a vehicle that was traveling westbound on University Avenue. EMS from Gainesville Fire Rescue arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

On Wednesday, an unknown vehicle was traveling southbound on SE 27th Street in Gainesville when it collided with a 45-year-old man from Gainesville on a bicycle who was traveling south on the southbound shoulder.
