Scooter rider hospitalized after crash with semi

A crash between a mobility scooter and semitrailer sent a 58-year-old Gainesville man to UF Shands with serious injuries, according to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) press release.

The accident happened at the intersection of SR 222 and NW 51st Street at 10 p.m. Wednesday night. The unidentified Gainesville man was riding the e-scooter south on the sidewalk of 51st Street when he reached NW 39th Avenue, FHP reported.

The man tried to cross 39th even though oncoming traffic had a green light, according to FHP. In the last lane, a 2015 Freightliner tractor trailer traveling east hit the man on the scooter.

First responders transported the Gainesville man to Shands and cited him for causing the crash.

FHP spokesman Pat Riordan said the man should have waited until he had the right-of-way to cross the road. He said the seated mobility mobility scooter was not one of the e-scooters that arrived in Gainesville last month.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated with information from Pat Riordan. A previous version of the story incorrectly stated the man was riding an e-scooter.
