On Tuesday night at Gainesville High, the GHS softball team shut out visiting Santa Fe, 6-0, behind junior Kyra Hornsby’s six-hitter.

Gainesville finished with 11 hits, including two doubles and a triple.

“I was happy with our offensive performance and Kyra did a great job in the circle,” said Gainesville coach Chris Chronister.

The Hurricanes (8-2), who defeated Santa Fe in a shootout, 26-15, on February 23, completed the 2-game sweep of the Raiders (6-5).

“We talked to the team before the game and told them we weren’t depending on scoring 26 tonight,” Chronister said. “We’re not looking at the same type of game we had earlier in the year.”

The ‘Canes, who hit four home runs in the earlier meeting, got the only runs they would need in the third inning.

With one out, shortstop Ayanna Woodard singled and stole second.

Left fielder Parris Wiggs followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners.

That brought up clean-up hitter Brianna Boggs. The senior, who hit a home run in the first meeting, delivered a 2-RBI single to center to give GHS a 2-0 lead.

Santa Fe, which put its lead-off batter on base in every inning, had its best chance to score in the second inning.

Sam Dunton and Maddie Martin had a single and a double to start the inning.

However, Hornsby struck out the next two, and after walking lead-off hitter Amy Crosby to load the bases with two outs, pitcher Madi Hewett flew out to center to end the threat.

Gainesville’s Karter Thorp led off the fourth with a double and scored on Jayla Clark’s single. Clark would later score on an error for a 4-0 lead.

Addison Joseph had an RBI double in the fifth and Hornsby added an RBI single a couple of batters later for the final result.

The ‘Canes bounced back from a 13-3 loss at home on Saturday to nationally ranked Lakewood Ranch (Bradenton).

“When you get run-ruled like that you just don’t know how your team is going to respond,” said Gainesville coach Chris Chronister. “But they really came out fired up tonight. They were ready to play and played great in all phases of the game.”

Santa Fe will host Buchholz at 7 p.m. on Thursday, while GHS will face Clay (Green Cove Springs) at 7 p.m. on Thursday night at the Tournament of Champions at Oakleaf High School in Orange Park.
