High School Baseball: PK Yonge blasts Eastside 12-0

Last night, the P.K. Yonge baseball team cruised to a 12-0 win in six innings at Eastside.  The Blue Wave put the game away early with two runs in the first, two runs in the second, and three runs in the third. Junior TJ Shay went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored, and Denny Dawson went 2-for-2 with a triple and four runs scored.  Senior Kyle Chap-el threw a 3-hitter with seven strikeouts and only two walks in six innings pitched. P.K. Yonge, which had 10 stolen bases, improved to 7-1, while Eastside dropped to 3-6.

The defending 1A state champion Williston baseball team lost at rival Trenton, 10-4, which evened the 2-game series between the Red Devils and the Tigers.  Williston won at Trenton 4-3 on February 25th.  Trenton, which improved to 3-4, will travel to Newberry for a key district game on Friday night, while the Red Devils, who dropped to 5-4 on the season, will host Class 4A North Marion tomorrow night at 7.

Bell improved to 3-5 with a 9-5 win at Oak Hall School of Gainesville.  The Bulldogs, who scored the winning run as part of a 5-run fourth, will play Newberry tonight in the ultra-competitive Class 1A-District 7, which includes Trenton, Williston, Bell, and Chiefland.

Dixie County will be back in action tomorrow night at 6 at home against Jefferson County, while Bronson, which is still seeking its first win of the season, hosts Branford tomorrow night at 7.

Softball: Brianna Boggs’ walk-off single propels Hurricanes past Santa Fe 1-0 

Last night in a match-up of state-ranked softball teams, Gainesville High, ranked second in the state in Class 5A, edged 3A number 4 Santa Fe, 1-0, on an RBI single by junior Brianna Boggs in the bottom of the ninth inning.  Senior Alissa Humphrey gave up two hits, one walk and struck out 20. Santa Fe, which dropped to 6-2, plays at Keystone Heights tomorrow, while Gainesville, which improved to 6-0, hosts Middleburg on Friday.

Also last night, Trenton cruised to a 10-0 win against visiting Mayo Lafayette.  It was the fifth shutout of the season for the defending Class 1A state champions, who improved to 9-0. It was also the eighth time this season that Trenton had scored at least 10 runs in a game.  Up next? The Chiefland Indians, who will host Trenton in a Class 1A-District 7 game on Friday night at 7, lost at Lake City Columbia, 15-5, last night.  

Dixie County improved to 8-1 with a 13-0 win against Bronson thanks to a 6-run first inning. The Bears will travel to Lafayette tomorrow night at 7.

Bell was also a big winner. The Lady Bulldogs rolled to 10-0 win at home in five innings against Fort White.  Bell, which put the game out of reach with a 7-run 3rd inning, improved to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in Class 1A-District 6.  Bell will travel to Dixie County on Friday.

Also tomorrow night, Williston will host Class 6A Gainesville Buchholz. The Red Devils are 3-3.
