Area basketball roundup: Bell girls and boys teams sweep

On Monday night the Bell boys’ basketball team cruised past Cedar Key, 57-16. The Bulldogs jumped out to an 18-0 lead in the opening quarter. They snapped a four-game losing streak in the process.

Bell, which improved to 8-5, is back in action this Friday at Branford.

The Lady Bulldogs were also a winner on Monday.

The Bell girls, who improved to 10-5, defeated Cedar Key, 46-19, for their fifth straight win. Senior Taria Liles almost single-handily outscored the Sharks, finishing with a game-high 13 points. She also added eight rebounds.

Senior Shae Fischer was next with 10 points and a team-leading five steals. Sophomore Nicole Shepherd led the team on the glass with 11 rebounds.

The Trenton boys’ basketball team is off to a 2-0 start this week.

On Monday, the Tigers defeated Union County, 52-41. The win snapped a four-game losing streak. Sophomore Xavier Jones led Trenton with 19 points.

Last night, Trenton (5-8) won at Lafayette (Mayo), 64-40. Junior Tyler Perry had 22 points, followed by sophomore Mason Smith with 12. The Tigers host Branford on Thursday night at 8 p.m.

On Tuesday night in Alachua, the Santa Fe boys basketball team got off to a good start against visiting Gainesville High and held on for a 52-48 win against the Hurricanes.

The Raiders jumped out to a 17-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. North Carolina State signee Ernest Ross led the Raiders with 19 points.

Santa Fe (7-4), winners of two in a row, will host North Marion (Citra) on Friday night. Gainesville (5-5) will travel to rival Buchholz on Friday. We’ll have coverage of the GHS-Buchholz game on 106.9 “I am Country” beginning at 7 p.m.

For the sixth consecutive time the P.K. Yonge vs. Hawthorne boys’ basketball game was decided by single digits.

Last night at P.K. Yonge, the defending 1A state champion Hornets led 9-4 at the end of the first quarter, but the Blue Wave rallied to take a 23-15 lead at the half en route to a 52-49 win. Junior Palmer Pressley scored nine of his 13 points in the fourth quarter.

P.K. Yonge (9-3) will host Eastside on Thursday night at 8 p.m., while Hawthorne (2-4) will host Bronson on Friday night at 8 p.m.
