Sports beat: Eastside wins on senior night

On Tuesday night, the Eastside boys basketball team improved to 17-1 with a 68-49 win against visiting North Marion.

On senior night, three seniors scored in double figures for the Rams, led by Qua Brodus, who scored a game-high 24 points. He was one of six seniors honored before the game.

He and fellow seniors Jarvey Gainey and Omar Brown combined for 55 of the Rams 69 points as Eastside won its final home game of the regular season.

The Rams return to action this Friday on the road at Alachua County rival Hawthorne. Last year, Eastside snapped a seven-game losing streak in the series by beating the eventual Class 1A state champions.

The Trenton girls’ basketball team won its second game in a row with a 60-44 win at Class 3A Trinity Catholic (Ocala) on Tuesday night.

The Lady Tigers bounced back from a loss at Buchholz (Gainesville) on a Friday, with a 57-23 win at home against Bradford (Starke) on Monday night. In that game the Lady Tigers were led by senior Samarie McHenry with 21 points. Bri Becker added 14 points and Jordan Douglas added 13 for the Lady Tigers, who will host next week’s Class 1A-District 6 tournament.

Trenton, which improved to 19-4, will close out the regular season at Bronson tomorrow night.

On the soccer field, the P.K. Yonge girls’ soccer team defeated Newberry, 6-0, last night to finish the regular season unbeaten.

The Lady Blue Wave, who improved to 12-0-2, will be the featured guests on “The Prep Zone” sports show tonight from 7-8 p.m. at Sonic Drive-In on 106.9 “I am Country.”
