Sports beat: Gainesville High softball downs Union County on the road

The Gainesville softball team had no trouble on the road in Lake Butler against Union County in a match-up of top 10 teams.

Parris Wiggs hit a grand slam and the Purple Hurricanes, who are ranked 8th in Class 5A by MaxPreps, built an early 10-1 lead en route to a 10-5 win against the Tigers.

Union County (10-7), which is ranked 7th in Class 1A, closes out the regular season at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Baldwin.

GHS, which improved to 15-6, will host Williston in the regular season finale on Friday night. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m.

(BASEBALL) – Buchholz defeated Keystone Heights, 9-2, on the road.

Sophomore Kyle Brewer had a double and drove in three runs and Caden Kresak and Brett Blair had a pair of hits for the Bobcats, who improved to 16-5-1.

Buchholz will honor its eight seniors on Thursday night at 7 p.m. for Senior Night against Eastside.

Elsewhere, Chiles (Tallahassee) bounced back from a 1-run loss at Buchholz on Monday night to mercy-rule Columbia (Lake City), 10-0, in five innings on Tuesday night.

The Tigers, who fell to 11-12, will host Hamilton County (Jasper) in the regular season finale at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
