State championship in basketball and football? Hawthorne High School’s Dre Lawrence shooting for the stars this season

Today’s Rising Senior spotlight is on Dre Lawrence of Hawthorne High School.

Lawrence will participate in football and basketball this year for the Hornets.  He was a Gainesville Sun 2nd team All-Area selection in basketball as a junior.  The 5’10 guard averaged eight points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game for the Class 1A state champion Hornets.

Winning a state title this past March was his favorite high school sports moment. Hawthorne finished with eight straight wins, including a 42-28 win against Hilliard in the 1A Final in Lakeland.

For the football team, Lawrence will play defensive back, wide receiver, and running back this fall for Hawthorne. Last year, he finished with 38 tackles, five interceptions, and one forced fumble as the Hornets made it back to the postseason.

He earned first team All-Area and All state on a defense that allowed 12 points or less six times last season. His goals for his senior season are to win state in basketball and football.

He currently has an offer from Carthage College but also has interest for a couple of others.
