Two more athletes from The Rock School are moving on to the next level.
This past November a total of six athletes signed their Letter of Intent to play collegiate sports.
On Wednesday, girls basketball players Audrey Hubbard and Callie West held a signing ceremony after doing the same.
Hubbard, who transferred from Trenton to play her senior year for the Lions, signed with Richard Bland College of William & Mary, a community college in South Prince George, Virginia.
“It’s definitely something I’ve worked for my whole life,” she said. “I’ve played AAU since fifth grade. I’ve been to a couple of different high schools finding my way through it, but The Rock gave me the best opportunity to grow as an athlete and get ready for the collegiate level.”
The 5’8 combo guard, who has a 3.7 grade point average, scored 268 points (10.7 ppg), grabbed 96 rebounds, dished out 65 assists, had 18 blocks and 81 steals as a senior.
She scored her 1,000th point this past December.
“Audrey, we call her ‘AB,’ was one of the girls that we needed to come to our program and toughen us up,” said The Rock girls basketball coach Wes Phillips. “AB is the type of person that is going to grind. She’s going to fight, she’s going to hustle, she’s going to dive on the floor for the loose balls. She’s that type of player.”
Hubbard, who overcame a torn ACL her sophomore year, was given the ‘Tenacity’ award on Wednesday as well. She plans to major in nursing.
West, who is the President of the National Honor Society at The Rock, is headed south to New College of Florida, The Honors College, an NAIA school located in Sarasota. She plans to major in health sciences.
“Callie is a giver,” Phillips said. “She is like a parent. She is a very responsible young lady on and off the court. That’s why she is in the Honors program. She exhibits the responsibility of being a Christian walking that faithful walk, upholding those standards…she’s also a shooter, catch-and-shoot knockdown shooter, and she’s also a slasher. Her ability to finish has helped us a lot.”
The 5’9 guard/small forward scored 111 points, grabbed 117 rebounds, and added 20 assists, 33 steals and five blocks this past season. She was given the Lion’s Heart trophy.
Her new school got to see her play when The Rock played their JV team. Unlike Hubbard, West did not play AAU basketball.
“I went and visited and really loved the campus and the coaches,” said West, who has a weighted 4.5 GPA. “I am excited. My freshman year was my first year ever playing basketball so I’m ecstatic because I would have never thought that I would be going to play at the collegiate level at all, so I’m so thankful and blessed.”
