The Alachua County Library District (ACLD) announced it is starting construction of a new library branch in Hawthorne to replace the existing building.

According to an ACLD press release, work has already started on removing the old parking lot and construction is anticipated to be completed, with the new branch open to the public, in early 2026.

The new branch will be more spacious with over 10,000 square feet to give more room for computers, seating and book stacks. The building will also allow ACLD to add improvements that will give the Hawthorne community additional ways to utilize the library, with plans that will include a Teen Space, Snuggle Up Center, Quiet Reading Room, MakerSpace area and study rooms.

During construction, the existing library building will remain open. The new library building will be built adjacent to the current building on the property.

“While we love our current building, we are beyond excited about the construction of the new library,” said Hawthorne Branch manager Cameron Burris in the press release. “It will offer so much more to the Hawthorne community and allow us to create new opportunities to participate, connect, and discover.”
