The Frazer School math team recently won the national championship while competing at the Mu Alpha Theta National Convention in Orlando on July 6-11.  

According to a press release, the team of 56 students claimed 255 trophies at the event and secured first place with a total of 7,283 points to edge American Heritage Broward, which finished second with 7,177 total points.  

Frazer School students won two of the four divisions (Theta and Statistics) and earned a second-place finish in the Alpha and Mu divisions, according to the release. Theta division consists of Algebra 2 and Geometry. Alpha is Pre-Calculus and Mu is Calculus. 

Mu Alpha Theta, the National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society, “is an organization whose purpose is the promotion of scholarship in, and enjoyment and understanding of, mathematics among high school and two-year college students,” according to the release. 

The yearly convention brings together hundreds of teachers and students from across the U.S. for five days of math-related events, the release said.  

Frazer School math coach Ziwei Lu said it was a real team effort, with more kids contributing points toward victory than normal. 

At this year’s event, Frazer School students won first-place trophies in the following categories.  

Theta:

Maxwell Xu – Theta Applications 

Ajay Sawant – Equations and inequalities 

Yifan Song – Conics 

Lily Zhou – Logarithms and exponents 

Fei Wang – ciphering 

Tony Lai – mental math; functions 

Maggie Gao – Theta chalk talk 

Alpha: 

Jonathan Lin – Matrices and Vectors 

Aadya Guduru – Alpha Chalk talk 

Xi Chen – Analytic Geometry 

Mu: 

Andrew Xing – Mu Applications; Integration Bee 

Katie He – Area and Volume; Speed Math 

Thomas Wu – Limits and Derivatives

Frazer School Principal Olanrewaju Fayiga, who is also a sponsor of the math team, said the kids worked very hard this summer to prepare for the championship.  

“I am very proud of them and their tremendous work ethic that prepared them for this championship,” Fayiga said in the release. 

According to the release, students were involved with two math camps, one in which they taught younger kids wanting to learn competitive math from 8 a.m. to noon every day. The second camp, going from 12:30 to 5:00 p.m. each day, was the kids’ own preparation for the national competition. 

Students will return to classes at The Frazer School starting on Monday, Aug. 4.
