Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) announced Tuesday that it will start emergency repairs to the sewer system south of Chiles Elementary School in Haile Plantation.

According to a GRU release, the repairs will take several months to complete and will impact traffic in the area, especially along School House Road.

There is currently a road closure with a detour between the roundabout at SW 98th Boulevard and SW 34th Lane. As repairs take place, GRU expects to modify the detour and will set up a complete or partial closure of the roundabout to complete all repairs.

Pedestrian traffic along School House Road will continue throughout the duration of the repairs and GRU is coordinating with Chiles Elementary School administration and local transportation officials regarding traffic diversions.

GRU originally responded to a small sanitary overflow on Sunday, Aug. 10, and, during the service call, crews discovered aging sewer mains that required immediate attention to avoid more costly and significant damage.

GRU has been working in the area for several months to repair aging gravity mains that are impeding flows through the system and causing potential safety hazards. Existing sewer lines are being replaced with PVC pipes to avoid future incidents, according to GRU.
