A Gainesville man was shot and killed in the Holly Heights neighborhood on Saturday morning when he reportedly fired a gun and Alachua County Sheriff’s deputies shot the suspect.

According to an Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) release, the incident occurred on Saturday morning in the 6700 block of SW 4^th Place (Holly Heights) in Gainesville when ACSO deputies responded to a call about a man who was armed with a handgun and beating on the front door of a residence.

Upon arrival, deputies found an individual who was armed and brandishing a firearm, making statements that led deputies to believe he was in a heightened state of crisis. Deputies attempted to negotiate with the suspect, later identified as 55-year-old Darian D. Holmes.

Deputies discovered Holmes had 14 prior felony convictions, including two for felon in possession of a firearm.

During the encounter, shots were fired. The four deputies returned fire, striking Holmes, who was transported to a local hospital where he later died due to his injuries.

As standard protocol, the four deputies were placed on administrative leave for discharging their services weapons pending the outcome of an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).
