Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) responded to a head-on fatal crash just before midnight on Saturday.
According to the report, a 30-year-old Jacksonville man was driving on the wrong side of Waldo Road, headed east in the westbound lanes. The man was identified by WCJB as Chris Payton-Jones, a United Football League cornerback.
FHP said a pickup truck driven by a 21-year-old from Middleburg with two passengers was coming the other direction, and the two vehicles collided. The pickup truck overturned, and the three occupants, all wearing seatbelts, received minor injuries, the report said.
The car with Payton-Jones caught fire in the middle of the road, and the report said he was pronounced dead at the scene.
