Key Points
  • Addison Allaire, a junior and University of Florida commit, leads Trenton as the No. 1 seed in the FHSAA Rural-District 7 softball tournament.
  • Leanna Bourdage, a junior at Gainesville High, bats .358 and helps lead the Hurricanes as the No. 1 seed in 5A-District 5.
  • Freshman Rylee Swilley, nation’s top freshman pitcher, bats .424 with a 0.64 ERA for No. 1 seeded Raiders in 3A-District 5.
  • Several underclassmen, including Corie Wheeler and Alaina Watson, have strong seasons, contributing to their teams’ top district seeds and postseason runs.

You’ve probably heard the names Addison Allaire, Leanna Bourdage, and Rylee “Roo” Swilley, and rightfully so.

They are the top high school softball players in the area.

Allaire is a junior for the Trenton softball team and a University of Florida commit, and Gainesville High’s Bourdage is also a junior and a Texas A&M University commit.

Swilley is just a freshman, but she has the potential to be the best of the trio by the time she finishes out her high school career.

That’s saying a lot.

Allaire helped lead Trenton to its second straight state championship last year. The reigning Florida Dairy Farmers Rural Player of the Year is batting .491 and she has dominated in the circle with 228 strikeouts and only 17 walks in 104.2 innings pitched.

The Tigers (19-3) are the No. 1 seed in the FHSAA Rural-District 7 tournament. They will play on Tuesday at 6 p.m. against the winner of tonight’s quarterfinal between No. 4 seed Chiefland and No. 5 seed Hawthorne.

Trenton is ranked No. 1 in the Rural classification and No. 13 overall in Florida in the FHSAA rankings. They are also sixth in the new regional rankings.

GHS (13-6) is the No. 1 seed in 5A-District 5. They received a bye in their 3-team district and will play either No. 2 seed Belleview (21-3) or No. 3 Deltona (12-4) at 7 p.m. on Thursday for the title.

Bourdage leads the Hurricanes with a .358 average and has 189 strikeouts and 40 walks in 96.1 innings pitched.

Swilley, who entered the season as the nation’s No. 1 freshman pitcher, according to Line Drive Media, and the No. 2 overall freshman in the country, is batting .424. She is 9-2 with a 0.64 ERA and has issued just 17 walks with 113 strikeouts in 88 innings pitched.

The Raiders (20-3), who are the No. 1 seed in 3A-District 5, will host No. 4 seed Eastside at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Thursday’s championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m.

But the area is full of good softball players, especially underclassmen.

Corie Wheeler of Santa Fe has had a big freshman season, batting .400 with 22 runs batted in (RBI), six doubles, one triple, and one home run.

Wheeler is second in on base percentage (.500) behind junior Maren Hornsby (.600), who leads the team with a .568 batting average, 14 stolen bases, 34 runs and 42 hits.

Swilley has a team-leading .970 slugging percentage and 32 RBI.

Sophomore Taylor Rogers, who is batting .308, is an up-and-comer for GHS. She is tied for first on the Hurricanes for the most hits (20) with senior Lana Renicks. She is second on the team with 17 runs scored.

If Florida had an All-State Freshman team, Grace McDaniel and Madison Hooper would be on it.

Both freshmen are batting over .400, and both are pushing close to 40 hits.

McDaniel (.513, 39 hits) has scored 49 runs this season, which is currently third in Florida, and Hooper (.448, 39 hits) has 49 RBI, which is currently second in the state this season.

It’s a big reason why the Bobcats (17-8) are the No. 2 seed in 6A-District 3 and currently a No. 6 seed in Class 6A-Region 1.

“It helps to win when you have talent that can play,” Buchholz coach Will Hooper said via text message on Saturday.

Newberry’s Tristan Layfield is leading the Lady Panthers, the top seed in 3A-5, in batting average (.435), slugging percentage (.532), hits (27), and stolen bases (24). The sophomore also has a team-best two triples.

She’s a key contributor for a Newberry program looking to win back-to-back district titles. Last year’s softball team won its first district title in a quarter of a century.

Then there’s eighth-grader Alaina Watson of Countryside Christian, who was batting .614 through 14 games.

She had 28 RBI, 27 hits, and eight doubles, and two home runs, all team highs, for the Minutemen (7-9), the No. 3 seed in 1A-District 4.

There are certainly more underclassmen to consider, but for those teams, those are some of the players who have helped lead their respective teams heading into the postseason.

Area teams Branford (Rural-District 6), Trenton (Rural-District 7), Newberry (2A-5), Santa Fe (3A-5), and GHS (5A-5) all received No. 1 seeds in their respective district tournaments, which run from today through Thursday.

The regional tournaments begin next week.
