A crime-fighting organization that has served Alachua County for more than four decades is expanding its regional identity and offering larger rewards in an effort to encourage more residents to help solve serious crimes.

Formerly known as Alachua County Crime Stoppers, the nonprofit organization has officially rebranded as Crime Stoppers of North Central Florida, reflecting its service area across Alachua, Gilchrist and Levy counties, according to a press release.

Along with the name change, the organization announced it has increased its maximum reward for information leading to an arrest in capital murder cases from $1,000 to $5,000.

Founded in 1982 as Crime Trac Inc., the organization has worked with law enforcement agencies and community members for 44 years, providing anonymous tip services designed to help solve crimes while protecting the identity of those who come forward with information.

The expanded reward program has already yielded results, according to officials at the organization.

Crime Stoppers recently paid its first $5,000 reward after receiving a tip that led to the apprehension of Henri Hart, who faces charges in the May 10 stabbing death of Ricky Morrow.

Officials said the case demonstrates the potential of higher reward amounts to generate actionable information from the public, according to a press release.

The increased reward structure primarily applies to capital murder investigations, though rewards for other crimes have also been expanded. Tips leading to arrests may qualify for rewards in cases involving arson, elder abuse, child abuse, human trafficking, animal abuse, homicide, drug trafficking, robbery, burglary, theft and wanted fugitives.

“Our new name — Crime Stoppers of North Central Florida — reflects our commitment to serving a broader region, while the increased reward shows we’re serious about results,” said Vice President Bennett Latimer in a press release. “We want every resident to know their anonymous tip can make a major difference.”

The organization operates independently of law enforcement agencies and allows tipsters to remain anonymous throughout the process. Information can be submitted by phone, online or through a mobile application.

Crime Stoppers officials said community participation remains one of the most effective tools in solving crimes and helping law enforcement identify suspects.

Residents with information about criminal activity can submit anonymous tips by calling 352-372-STOP (7867), through the organization’s website at Crime Stoppers of North Central Florida, or by using the P3 Tips mobile app.

The organization said the rebranding and enhanced reward program are intended to strengthen public engagement and improve public safety throughout North Central Florida.
