The city of Gainesville is inviting residents to help shape the future redevelopment of the former Thelma A. Boltin Center site during a community workshop on Tuesday, June 30.
The workshop will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Thomas Center Long Gallery (302 NE Sixth Ave.) in Gainesville.
The planning effort is being led by the city’s Wild Spaces & Public Places Department in partnership with the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department. The project focuses on the future of the former Thelma A. Boltin Center property, located at 516 NE Second Ave.
In September 2025, the Gainesville City Commission voted to demolish the former center and reimagine the site as a trailhead along the Sweetwater Greenway Loop trail system. As directed by the City Commission, the planning process will explore ways to honor the site’s historical and cultural significance, including its role during World War II and its legacy as a longstanding community gathering place.
Plans under consideration also include the development of a functional outdoor community space, stormwater improvements aimed at reducing neighborhood flooding, and opportunities to highlight and celebrate folk art traditions championed by Thelma Boltin throughout her career.
This workshop is the first of three public engagement sessions planned for the project. Participants will hear a brief presentation and have the opportunity to provide feedback on the Thelma Boltin Trailhead and Sweetwater Greenway Loop Trail Alignment Project.
