Alachua County Animal Resources is inviting the community to its annual Summer Lovin’ Adopt-A-Thon, the shelter’s largest adoption event of the year, offering free adoptions for hundreds of dogs and cats on Saturday, Aug. 8.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Alachua County Animal Resources shelter at 3400 NE 53rd Ave. in Gainesville, according to a press release.

Held in partnership with the University of Florida and its student chapter of the Association of Shelter Veterinarians, the annual event brings together student volunteers and shelter staff to help connect adoptable pets with loving families during the busy summer intake season.

All adoption fees will be waived during the event. Every adopted pet will receive a veterinary examination and will be spayed or neutered, microchipped, licensed, up to date on core vaccinations, treated for worms, and provided flea and heartworm prevention. Adopters will also receive a goodie bag with toys and supplies to help their new companion adjust to its new home. The total value of the included veterinary care and supplies is up to $600 per pet.

“Summer is one of our busiest times of the year, making events like the Summer Lovin’ Adopt-A-Thon especially important,” said Animal Resources Director Dianne Sauve in a press release. “Every adoption creates space for another animal in need while giving a deserving pet the chance to become part of a loving family. We encourage anyone considering adding a pet to their home to visit the shelter and meet their new best friend.”

Residents are encouraged to browse adoptable pets online before the event and come prepared to meet the animal that best fits their household. Adoptions are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Adopters must be at least 18 years old and present a valid photo ID and proof of address. Households with existing pets should also bring proof of current rabies vaccinations and pet licenses.

In preparation for the Adopt-A-Thon, the Animal Resources shelter will be closed on Wednesday, Aug. 5, for its regularly scheduled quarterly deep cleaning and employee continuing education.

For additional event updates, residents are encouraged to follow the Summer Lovin’ Adopt-A-Thon event on Facebook.
