HCA Florida North Florida Hospital has introduced a new surgical imaging technology designed to help neurosurgeons more accurately identify and remove cancerous brain tumor tissue during surgery.
The hospital recently completed its first neuro-oncology procedure using Gleolan, a fluorescent imaging agent that helps surgeons distinguish malignant or suspected malignant brain tumor tissue from healthy brain tissue during operations involving gliomas, the most common type of brain tumor, according to an HCA press release.
Gleolan contains aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride, which patients drink before surgery. When used in combination with a surgical microscope equipped with blue light filters, the dye causes certain tumor tissue to fluoresce, allowing surgeons to better visualize cancerous tissue while preserving healthy brain tissue.
The enhanced visualization can help surgeons remove more of a tumor while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue, potentially improving patient outcomes.
“At HCA Florida Healthcare, we are committed to investing in technology and treatment options that support high-quality, patient-centered care,” said Dr. Alex Gumiroff, chief medical officer of HCA Florida North Florida Hospital, in the press release. “For patients facing a brain tumor diagnosis, access to advanced tools and an experienced care team can make an important difference in their care journey.”
The hospital’s first procedure using the technology was performed by neurosurgeon Dr. Gohar Majeed.
“Brain tumor surgery requires precision, planning and the right tools,” Majeed said. “This advanced visualization agent gives the surgical team another way to identify certain malignant tissue during surgery, which can support informed decision-making in the operating room. We are proud to bring this capability to patients in North Central Florida.”
