Gainesville seems to have a thing for specializing in edible tori (disk-shaped objects with holes in them), be it eight different donut shops and now seven different bagel shops. See and eat for yourself and let us know your favorites. 

Luke’s New York Bagel Shop

Hours: 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily 

Previously known as a walk-up store off South Main Street near Depot Park, Luke’s transitioned into a sit-down bagel restaurant off NW 39th Avenue in May—still keeping its Jonesville food truck and also expanding outside Alachua County to City Food Hall in Orlando. Luke’s boasts water from the Big Apple (its New York WaterMaker) as the secret ingredient for its bagels, including everything from cinnamon raisin, asiago and jalapeno cheddar. The new location in the former Red Onion Neighborhood Grill and includes an expanded menu, featuring items like salads, bagel deli sandwiches and desserts.

The Bagels and Co. 
Address: 1111 W University Ave., Apt. 80 
Hours: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily 

Bagels and Co. celebrated its Gainesville expansion in December with free bagels and cream cheese giveaways. The storefront is the eighth for the Philadelphia-based chain and features over a dozen varieties of Brooklyn-style bagels baked on-site daily. Specialty flavors include cranberry oat maple, French toast, blueberry, cheddar habanero, Dorito and Oreo, which can all be paired with more than 25 homemade cream cheese “schmears.”

The Bagel Bakery 
Address: 4113 NW 16th Blvd. 
Hours: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily 

A staple of the Northwest Gainesville community for over 25 years, the menu includes sandwiches, wraps or just bagels with cream cheese. Owner Jason Cole maintains a relationship with Gainesville Area Rowing and annually donates 1% of the restaurant’s gross sales to the program.   

Jeff’s Bagel Run 
Address: 3254 SW 35th Blvd. 
Hours: 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily 

Jeff’s is the most recent addition to Gainesville’s bagel landscape as part of the company’s goal of 50 locations across the U.S. by the end of the year. Ocoee husband and wife team of Jeff and Danielle Perera founded the company in 2019 in their kitchen and ensure each batch at any of their stores is still boiled and fresh daily, whether it’s pepperoni pizza bagel, cinnamon sugar or cacio e pepe flavors. Jeff’s opened at Butler Plaza near Trader Joe’s in July. 

Humble Wood Fire Bagel Shop 
Address: 307 SW 4th Ave. 
Hours: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily 

The hand-rolled organic bagel walk-up window joined as one of the original vendors in Gainesville’s 4th Ave Food Park in 2020. Customers can order plain bagels or beef up their bites with offerings like the SBLT on a bagel (shiitake “bacon,” romaine lettuce or arugula, house mayo, and tomato). Humble also serves wood-fired pizzas, calzones, salads and brunch. Food Network’s Guy Fieri featured the shop on his show “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives” last year. 

Bageland 
Address: 2441 NW 43rd St., #6C 
Hours: 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday 

Tucked away in the Shoppes at Thornebrook is Gainesville’s oldest and longest-running bagel shop. Bageland offers an array of flavors like garlic and pumpernickel and breakfast and lunch sandwiches, including chicken salad.   

Einstein Bros Bagels 
Address: 1600 SW Archer Rd. 
Hours: 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to Friday 

Einstein’s storefront in the Shands Sun Terrace in Gainesville contributes to the Colorado-based chain’s title of America’s largest bagel retailer. Any of the bagels, classic or gourmet, can be paired with the company’s hot and iced coffees, teas, juice and energy refreshers. The bagels transform into deli sandwiches on the lunch menu and desserts include cereal pops, cinnamon rolls and muffins.
