Gainesville woman receives 20-month prison sentence for unlawful firearm possession

A Gainesville woman was sentenced to 20 months in federal prison after previously pleading guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

According to a U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida release sent Wednesday, Jomekia Archer, 46, had prior convictions for possession of cocaine and sale of cannabis and was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm.

“I applaud the investigative work by the Gainesville Police Department, with support from our federal law enforcement partners, which facilitated our successful prosecution of this violent offender,” said John P. Heekin, United States attorney for the Northern District of Florida, in the release. “Keeping our communities safe from the predations of violent felons, like this defendant, is a top priority for my office.”

According to court documents, Archer arrived at her home March 14, 2026, and found neighbors hosting a birthday party. Archer appeared to be intoxicated and became upset that vehicles were parked in front of her residence.

Archer used profanity, demanded that the neighbors move their vehicles and stated, “I got some for y’all.” She then went inside her residence and returned carrying a rifle, which she pointed at multiple adults and children.

The subsequent investigation determined that the rifle had previously been reported stolen in Polk County, Texas.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Gainesville Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tyler Fleming prosecuted the case.
