The Cotton Club Museum & Cultural Center will present the two-day “Black Cowboys & Cowgirls: Then and Now” event on Friday and Saturday, April 12-13.
The free event will take place from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, April 12, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, at the Cotton Club Museum & Cultural Center (837 SE 7th Ave.) in Gainesville.
On Friday, local cowboy John H. Nix will narrate a “History of Cowboys and Cowgirls in Florida, from Africa to Alachua County.” Featured on-stage will be a colorful walk-thru panorama on loan from the Florida Department of Agriculture. A movie on Black Cowboys/Cowgirls follows. Popcorn will be provided.
On Saturday, the focus is on the horses. Meet the horses and take a photo in the saddle with them. Cattlemen will teach about the care and training of horses. Outside will be rodeo-style roping and lasso demonstrations. BBQ and other food will be available for purchase. Join in Square dance and Line dance demonstrations. Informal modeling of western and cowboy/girl fashions.
This is a fun learning experience for families, adults, teens and kids.
