Westwood Middle School
Photo by Glory ReitzThe Gainesville Police Department (GPD) arrested a Westwood Middle School student on Tuesday for bringing a loaded firearm onto campus.
According to a press release, school staff received a tip that a student had a handgun in a backpack. Staff informed the school resources officer, who then detained the student. A search of the backpack found a loaded handgun, GPD said.
GPD charged the student with carrying a concealed firearm and possession of a firearm on school property.
In October, GPD arrested a Gainesville High School student for having a firearm on campus.
He was wearing a MAGA hat so he’ll be pardoned.
Ridiculous comment.
You’re probably right, Kris: a presidential pardon.
People need to lock up their guns
I am grateful that a student spoke up and the school resource officer acted quickly in response to a 13 year old Westwood Middle School student who had a loaded gun in their backpack on campus. It is deeply concerning to know that a child had possession of a lethal weapon. The incident is under investigation and we do not know the particulars in this case, but we do know that 75 percent of school shooters acquire their gun from the home of a parent or a close relative. This is unacceptable. Adults have the responsibility to secure guns in their homes and vehicles. There are many different affordable secure storage options which prevent access by children and enable fast access by the gun owner. To learn more, please visit www.besmartforkids.org
