High speed chase through Newberry leads to arrest

Deputies were notified of a pursuit by the Florida Highway Patrol coming into Alachua County on State Road 26 (Newberry Rd.) from Gilchrist County on Sunday, Oct. 25th.

The suspect was charged with reckless driving and fleeing and eluding, according to Alachua County Sheriff’s Spokesperson Art Forgey.

Support for the pursuit was authorized in the form of stop sticks, according to reports.

ASO units were not authorized to pursue. Stop Stick deployment at County Road 337 and SR 26 by a deputy was unsuccessful, but Stop Stick deployment was successful at the 21000 block of SR 26. 

FHP initiated a PIT (pursuit immobilization technique) shortly thereafter. 

Once the vehicle spun to a stop, deputies pinned-in the vehicle in front of Hodge Farm where the suspect was held at gunpoint,” according to Forgey.

FHP placed the subject in custody. Two ASO vehicles were damaged during the box in of the vehicle post-PIT. No injuries to the suspect or any law enforcement officers involved were reported.
