Updating Breaking News: GPD identifies hit and run victim

The Gainesville Police Department has identified the scooter rider in the hit and run incident in the early morning hours of Monday August 10th.

The victim, Juanita Mae Jones, 30, who was found lying in the street with agonal breathing and severe head trauma, was transported to UF Health – SHANDS ER, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:15 AM on Monday when GPD units were dispatched to the 2400 block of NE 15th Street, in reference to the hit and run crash in which a vehicle struck Jones on a scooter and left the scene.

The suspect, Latesia E. Fisher, 23, who hit Jones, abandoned her vehicle, which was found near the scene. Fisher later returned to the scene and multiple signs of impairment were observed. A subsequent investigation resulted in her being arrested for DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash involving death, and no valid driver’s license.
