Newberry City Commissioner Tim Marden edged out challenger Joy Glanzer by 60 votes tonight in the Group 4 election.
Glanzer garnered 427 votes, 46.7 percent of the total 914 votes and Marden secured 487 or 53.3 percent of votes.
According to Newberry City Clerk Judy Rice who read the results just after 8 p.m. when the count was complete, the voter turnout was 17 percent of the estimated 5,400 voters in Newberry.
Tony Mazon, who ran unopposed in Group 5, will take over the seat of retiring Commissioner Paul Norfleet.
“My ears and eyes are open,” said Mazon, who is a UPS driver and says he knows all about Newberry from delivering throughout the city.
His concern, he said, is the lack of knowledge of what is happening in the city.
Even though he ran uncontested, Mazon had fun showing off his campaign sign along Newberry Road by spinning it and putting on a show for drivers passing by.
He said and he looks forward to getting sworn in on April 26th along with Marden.
The vote total fell short of the 1,300 Mayor Jordan Marlowe said he wanted to see in order to get in a dunk tank next month.Â
