The City of Newberry has voted during an emergency meeting on May 20th to draft a mirror Emergency Order to be in line with the governor’s order to be signed and put into effect on May 21st.
As a result, the adoption of the state’s emergency order will lift the mandatory use of face coverings in the eyes of the City of Newberry but, according to City Attorney Scott Walker, that doesn’t mean a citizen is excused from non-compliance.
The commission has directed their legal representative to reach out to the Governor’s office for more clarification of the county’s role in establishing rules for municipalities that can’t or chooses not to enforce them.
Mayor Jordan Marlowe said, “I hope that we have achieved the peace of mind that our businesses and residents hoped we would here tonight.”
