School board to address salary schedule, music education, safety

The School Board of Alachua County has a full agenda to work through tonight and it includes the 2020-2021 salary schedule.

The meeting starts at 6 p.m. and can be viewed several ways including in person at the Alachua County Public Schools District Office.

Here are some of the highlights and items of interest appearing on tonight’s agenda:

Teacher Advisory Committee

The superintendent has established a new Teacher Advisory Committee and created Bylaws to govern the Committee. The Bylaws are similar to those created for other committees. The Committee would be composed of staff of Alachua County Public Schools, with the anticipation of having representation on the Committee from each public elementary and secondary school within the District. The Committee would serve in an advisory role and would have no final decision-making authority.

Project Makeover

Project Makeover, Inc. is a Florida not-for-profit student run organization whose mission includes creating imaginative school spaces for communities. The proposed agreement between Project Makeover, Inc. and the School Board of Alachua County, Florida will set out terms and conditions between the parties concerning current and future projects at Alachua County Public School.

Early Childhood Music Education Incentive Pilot Program

The purpose of the Early Childhood Music Education Incentive Pilot Program is to assist selected school districts in implementing comprehensive music education programs for students in kindergarten through grade 2.

The purpose of the Early Childhood Music Education Incentive Pilot Program is to assist selected school districts in implementing comprehensive music education programs for students in kindergarten through grade 2. The University of Florida’s College of Education, in collaboration with Florida International University’s School of Music, shall evaluate the effectiveness of the pilot program by measuring student academic performance and the success of the program. Participating schools are Irby Elementary, Lake Forest Elementary, and Williams Elementary. Implementation of this project will include bi-weekly teacher collaborative planning, asynchronous lessons (in lieu of schedule changes to meet the 60 minute requirement) for the remainder of this school year, purchase of iPads for implementation of technology-based lessons and purchase of apps for the iPads, music teacher training on use of iPads (best practices and best apps for elementary music) and purchase of instruments needed for performance purposes.

Career Pathways agreement

District Interinstitutional Articulation Cooperative Agreement for Career Pathways is and agreement in which students who complete a Career Pathways articulated program of study in career and technical education are eligible to receive college credit at Santa Fe College.

Safety and Security of School Buildings

Based upon feedback from a security needs survey conducted in July 2020, the district intends to utilize funding provided by Safety and School Security initiative to improve school security at three area high schools with the greatest need across the district by installing safety communications equipment in the form of a radio system. These purchases will provide communications coverage throughout all areas of the high school buildings on their respective campuses.

Adoption of Salary Schedules for 2020-2021 Fiscal Year

The Superintendent recommends adoption of salary schedules as presented. It is further recommended that salary schedules adopted continue from year-to-year until amended by action of the Board.
