The Headquarters Library in downtown Gainesville reopened on Tuesday morning after restoring power to the building.

The building was closed for patrons for a little over three weeks after an electrical breaker failed on Dec. 30. The timeline to get a new breaker and schedule the installations caused the delay in opening, according to Brad McClenny, the library district’s public relations and marketing manager.

“Power has been restored to the building, and we are looking forward to providing the community with library services at the Headquarters Library,” the district said in a release. “We appreciate your patience while the location has been closed.”

Currently, the Micanopy Branch is closed after the town of Micanopy discovered mold in its building, with a portion rented by the library. The building was closed Nov. 27, 2024.

McClenny said the library district plans to return staff and prep to reopen that branch once it gets an all clear signal from the town.

The district sent its Bookmobile to Micanopy to provide services until a mechanical issue sidelined it.

THREE weeks to get a part and install it??!!!?? I’m guessing that the entire staff got it all paid time off as well!? Insofar as these libraries are marginally used (except by the homeless (who seem attracted to them like flies on honey) I also question why in 2025 we need so many. Why not two in Gainesville but not the numbers we have. Once again – government functioning at what it always does best: Mediocrity.

Staff was assigned to other locations across the district.
