Derrick: Mainstreet jumps into print

Mainstreet Daily News launches print edition
Mainstreet Daily News print edition.

Mainstreet Daily News would like to thank those who attended our first Newsmaker Interview Series event on Monday at Santa Fe College. It was a fun evening with Gainesville Mayor Lauren Poe, who made news in announcing a $10 million grant and disclosing a recent letter of protest to the Tallahassee mayor.

Mainstreet also made news of its own: We’re going into print. Each attendee received a copy (or several copies) of the prototype of our new print newspaper, which will begin publishing weekly this summer.

While other area publications are reducing days in print or going out of business altogether, Mainstreet is growing.

Mainstreet does not have a paywall, but pavement-pounding journalism is not free. Join your neighbors who make this vital work possible.

Make no mistake: Mainstreet will remain a digital-first operation—just not digital-only. We’ll continue to break news and send out our email newsletters (sign up here).

We will not sit on news you need to know because we’re waiting on a print edition. What we will do is use the newspaper to showcase our best work, to dive deeper on certain stories, and reach people and communities who have yet to discover our pavement-pounding journalism.

The reason is pretty simple: Good local journalism matters! And we are seeing increasing demand for more robust local news—from residents who are tired of overpaying for a corporate newspaper loaded with national stories.

Did I mention this weekly newspaper will be free? Brought to you by local businesses who want to support a truly local publication.

We will have many more updates for you in the coming months, including details on home delivery and bulk drop locations. In the meantime, there are two ways you can get involved.

First, you can send me a note at jc.derrick@mainstreetdailynews.com to sign up for our updates on the print edition, or to inquire about advertising opportunities.

Second, you can join us on April 14 for our second Newsmaker Interview Series event at Santa Fe College. This time I’ll be talking with Florida Supreme Court Justice Jamie Grosshans, the only woman on the court, who will be doing her first public media interview since her appointment. You won’t want to miss it.

We will have plenty of copies of our print prototype (pictured above) for you to take with you. Registration is now open via Eventbrite, and we look forward to seeing you there.
