Rescue crews responded Tuesday evening to a cow trapped in a sinkhole off County Road 236 in the High Springs area.
According to a High Springs Fire Department (HSFD) release, HSFD firefighters responded to the call around 7 p.m. and found a 1,200-pound cow trapped in a 20- to 25-foot sinkhole. The cow was standing just below chest depth on a shallow ledge in the water.
Firefighters entered the water to extricate the cow from the hole, and after two hours of using an improvised harness made of an old fire hose and ropes, the crews were able to lift the cow out of the sinkhole.
The HSFD firefighters were assisted by Alachua County Fire Rescue’s (ACFR) technical rescue crew. The ACFR crew provided additional manpower along with heavy lifting equipment.
Once removed from the sinkhole, the cow appeared to be uninjured.
what a mooving tale of heroism.
