Local law enforcement holds drug take back day

Law enforcement around the region will host sites for prescription drug returns for the 22nd DEA Drug Take Back Day on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event, typically held in April and October each year, aims at reducing the risk of opioid addiction and overdose.

In October, Florida’s 154 participating agencies collected 32,858 pounds of drugs—fifth most in the nation and up from 29,260 in April 2021. 

“The drug overdose epidemic in the United States is a clear and present public health, public safety, and national security threat,” the DEA said on its website. 

On Saturday, local law enforcement will staff the following sites for takebacks: 

Alachua County: 

• Alachua County Sheriff’s Office
• Trinity United Methodist Church (4000 NW 53rd Ave.)
• Hitchcocks in Hawthorne on US 301
• Santa Fe College Police Department (Building T)
• Alachua Police Department at Hitchcocks on US 441

Gilchrist County:

• Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office at the Trenton Train Depot

Columbia County:

• Columbia County Sheriff’s District 2 Office (118 SW Wilson Springs Road, Ft. White) 
• Cheek and Scott Pharmacy on West US 90

• Lake City Police Department

Levy County:

• Levy County Sheriff’s Office in Bronson
• Chiefland Walmart Supercenter
• Chiefland Police Department
• Cedar Key Police Department 
• Inglis Town Hall
• Williston Police Department

Suwannee County:

• Cheek and Scott Pharmacy in Live Oak
• Walgreens in Live Oak
