DeSantis declares emergency in response to pipeline shutdown

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a State of Emergency Tuesday afternoon as gas stations throughout Alachua County and all of Florida sell out of gasoline.

The Executive Order 21-105 states that the Colonial Pipeline cyberattack is the reason behind the declaration.

“As a result of the cyberattack, Colonial Pipeline was forced to temporarily halt all pipeline operations in order to contain and respond to the attack,” the order states.

“The disruption of Colonial Pipeline operations poses a significant and immediate three to the continued delivery of such fuel to the State of Florida and many other states located in the Eastern United States,” the order explains.

The order will remain in effect until pipeline operations have fully resumed.

The order designates the director of the division of emergency management as the state coordinating officer for the duration of the emergency and directs all state, regional and local government agencies to assist in meeting the response.

The Florida National Guard has been activated to be used as needed.

The order also suspends enforcement of the registration for commercial motor vehicles that enter Florida to provide fuel, emergency services or supplies.

The executive director of the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) is also given the ability to suspend enforcement of some vehicle registration requirements, and can waive hours of service requirement for such vehicles registered in other jurisdictions.

As of Wednesday morning, some gas stations in Newberry and throughout Alachua County received overnight fuel deliveries but are expected to run out by noon today.
