On to the state finals!

The Hawthorne Hornets once again relied on stellar defense, and an opportunistic offense to claw its way into the state final after upsetting the defending state champion Madison County Cowboys 18-14 in Hawthorne on Friday night.

This comes on the heels of the boys and girls basketball teams at Hawthorne winning state championships in March of 2020.

The Cowboys got on the board first with a first quarter touchdown, but two scores by the Hornets in the second quarter gave them a halftime lead of 12-6.

Madison County retook the lead 14-12 with a touchdown and two-point conversion in the third quarter.

The Hornets answered in the fourth with its third score of the game, giving them an 18-14 lead, which its defense held throughout the final period.

The win gives Hawthorne an 10-2 record on the season. They face uthe 14-0 Baker Gators in the 1-A state final on December 17th. Baker defeated Sneads 41-7 in the other semifinal game.
