Updating Breaking News: Fatal hit-and-run incident in Gainesville kills UF student

The Gainesville Police Department responded to a hit-and-run incident last night at approximately 10:49 pm in the 2000 block of West University Avenue in Gainesville.

According to a statement released by GPD, a pedestrian victim appeared to be crossing the street and was struck by a vehicle that was traveling westbound. EMS from Gainesville Fire Rescue arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

The victim is a UF student, although no other details were released.

The University of Florida Police Department also arrived at the scene and has been assisting as requested. 

The initial investigation describes the vehicle as a possible BMW sedan. It was last seen traveling northbound on NW 20th Drive.
