Video: Watch the Levy County school bus crash

A dashcam video posted to Facebook appears to show a tractor-trailer traveling at 72 miles per hour when it plows into the back of a stopped Levy County school bus.

The Wednesday accident sent five students to UF Health Shands. Florida Highway Patrol troopers are investigating the crash, including the company that owns the truck involved.

The Facebook page Twisted Truckers, which has 1.2 million likes, posted two photos of the crash on Thursday, sparking a discussion about the factors that led to the accident. Hours later, Twisted Truckers posted a 10-second video “sent in by anonymous” that appears to show the collision from the dashcam of the moving truck.

The screen shows the tractor-trailer moving at 72 miles per hour at the time of impact. The sun was shining and the left lane of US Highway 19 appeared to be open as the rig approaches the bus. The truck veers toward the left lane shortly before reaching the stopped bus, but the screen continued to show a speed of 72 until contact.

The video has almost 4,000 reactions, 2,500 comments and 215,000 views.

FHP spokesperson Pat Riordan said investigators are aware of the video but have not been able to verify its authenticity.

“We don’t know where the video originated from,” Riordan said in a phone interview. “We’ll take the video into consideration, especially if we can get our hands on the original, so we have a clear understanding from start to finish where this video came from and, obviously, to make sure it has not been modified. This video doesn’t change the fact that we’re still going to do our own independent investigation.”
