Sports beat: Trenton, Hawthorne boys hoops among area teams to play for a title

There was plenty of boys’ district hoops action on Tuesday night.

In Class 4A-District 5, North Marion (Citra) defeated Keystone Heights, 74-37, while Bradford (Starke) advanced with a 78-71 win against Dunnellon in the other district quarterfinal.

Top seed Eastside will play No. 4 seed North Marion on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the district semifinals. The 3rd-seeded Tornadoes will face No. 2 seed and host Santa Fe in the other semifinal at 7:30 p.m.

GHS advanced with a 45-33 win against rival Buchholz in the Class 6A-District 2 quarterfinals.

The 4th-seeded Hurricanes (10-11) face top seed Columbia (Lake City) in Wednesday night’s district semifinals at Lincoln High School (Tallahassee). The tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

In Class 1A-District 6, it will be the top two seeds on Friday for the district title.

Top seed Bell defeated No. 5 seed Hilliard, 34-33, on a buzzer beater. The Bulldogs will play No. 3 seed Trenton. The Tigers eliminated No. 2 seed Union County (Lake Butler), 73-62, in the other semifinal.

In the Class 1A-District 7 tournament at Williston, the defending state champion Hawthorne Hornets advanced to the district championship game with a 67-47 win against No. 3 seed Newberry.

SOCCER ACTION – The P.K. Yonge girls soccer team captured the Class 3A-District 4 title with a 6-0 win against Keystone Heights. Faith Hardy scored four first half goals for the Lady Blue Wave, who won their second straight district title and their third in the past four years.

The P.K. Yonge boys lost a heart-breaker to Crescent City, falling 4-3 in the district championship match on a goal with five seconds remaining.

Elsewhere, Gainesville lost to Seabreeze (Daytona Beach), 1-0, in the Class 5A-District 4 championship game. The Hurricanes will be on the road for the first round of the 5A state playoffs on Wednesday, Feb. 17.

MONDAY – The Columbia (Lake City) boys’ soccer narrowly missed an opportunity to win its first district title in school history with a 1-0 loss to Lincoln (Tallahassee) in the Class 6A-District 2 championship match. However, the Tigers (13-5-1) are still headed to the FHSAA state playoffs for the first time since 2010.
