Bobcats trounce Lions on Homecoming

Buchholz quarterback Creed Whittemore uncorked a 65-yard touchdown throw to a wide open Adrian Sermons on the first play of the game and the Bobcats never looked back.

Whittemore accounted for three touchdowns in the Bobcats’ 49-3 homecoming game victory over the Leon (Tallahassee) Lions.

“After our last game against Cardinal Gibbons we just wanted to come out and settle down and just run our offense,” Whittemore said. “We put in a couple of new things, and against a team like this, you can run a decent amount of stuff, and I think we just wanted to settle down and run our plays.”

On the very next play after Sermons’ score, Jacarree Kelly hauled in an interception for Buchholz. Then a 41-yard grab by Quan Lee, his only catch of the game, set up an 11-yard rushing touchdown by Whittemore.

Sermons eclipsed 100 yards receiving in the first quarter with a 40-yard catch. It set up a one-yard rushing score by EJ Gadson to extend the Buchholz lead to 21-0.

The second quarter was a carbon copy of the first for the Bobcats. They put up 21 more points and led 42-0 going into the half.

And the second quarter was wild, starting off with an insane punt return touchdown by Lee in which he dropped the ball in the process.

The Buchholz offense added two more rushing scores, a 51-yard touchdown by Whittemore and a 28-yarder by Gadson.

“I think I saw the field a little bit better tonight,” Whittemore said.

Buchholz improved to 4-1 with the win, while Leon dropped to 1-3.

Next up for Buchholz is a city showdown against the rival Gainesville Hurricanes at Citizens Field on Thursday, Oct. 7.

“It will be a lot of emotion,” Whittemore said. “We’ve got a couple of kids that came over from GHS. I think if we play within ourselves, we’ll come out with the victory.”
