Bronson shuts out visiting St. Francis Catholic

Prior to its game against winless St. Francis Catholic Academy (Gainesville), Bronson football coach Russell Holley said he wanted his team to start fast.

The Eagles did just that.

Anuery Montero intercepted Wolves’ quarterback Riley Brown on the first offensive possession of the game and returned it to the Wolves’ 6-yard line. On the next play, Bronson quarterback Riley Bray ran it in from six yards out just 90 seconds into the game and the rout was on.

The Eagles led 43-0 at the half and cruised to a 56-0 win at home.

“We started fast,” Holley said. “St. Francis made a turnover early that really put them in a bad situation. We did a good job running our offense.”

Bray had a 9-yard scoring toss to Jesse Williams and back-up quarterback David Runion threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Montero as Bronson had a 22-0 lead after the first quarter.

The Eagles (5-4) preserved a first half shutout when Landen Gibbs intercepted a pass at the goal line on the final play at the half as the Wolves (0-9) were about to score.

“Defensively we started well with some 3 and outs and were able to get some points early,” Holley said. “We had multiple guys score.”

Junior running back Donteau Jenkins was named the Sonic Drive-In Player of the Game after rushing for three scores, including a 57-yard scoring run in the first half. He also added two 2-point conversion runs, accounting for 22 of the Eagles’ points.

“Donteau has super vision and is a really strong and shifty runner for his size,” Holley said.

Senior Ke’Tron Thomas had a five-yard touchdown run and junior Ashton Wilkerson closed out the first half scoring with a 61-yard touchdown run.

Montero intercepted a pass at the goal line with just over two minutes to play to give the Eagles their third shutout of the season.

Bronson will close out the regular season next Friday at home against Umatilla with a chance at a postseason bid.

“Everything comes down to next week vs 4A Umatilla as far as the playoffs are concerned.”
