Niceville 38, Buchholz 35

The high school football season came to an end on Friday night for the Buchholz Bobcats, but not without a fight against unbeaten Niceville.

The Bobcats got two touchdowns from Quan Lee, including a long punt return that set up a three-yard touchdown run by Quan Smith, but it wasn’t enough as Buchholz fell in double overtime, 38-35.

Just prior to overtime, Buchholz’s Hunter Smith missed a 40-yard field goal with 2:19 to play that would have given the Bobcats a 10-point lead.  Buchholz finished the season with a record of 8-2.

Hawthorne 14, Wildwood 8

The Hawthorne Hornets are the only Alachua County team left standing in the postseason.

The Hornets went on the road and defeated Wildwood, 14-8, in the Class 1A state playoffs. Hawthorne will host three-time defending state champion Madison County in this Friday’s state semifinals. Madison County overcame a 7-6 deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat Union County on the road 18-7.

Columbia 28, Mainlan 26

The Columbia Tigers also moved on to the next round of the high school state playoffs with a come-from-behind 28-26 win against visiting Mainland (Daytona Beach) last Friday.

Columbia’s Adeon Farmer recovered a Mainland fumble in mid-air and scored on a 58-yard run with 2:50 to play to give the Tigers their fifth straight win.

Columbia will host St. Augustine in the Class 6A Region Finals this Friday night.  The winner will play either Lake Minneola or Gaither (Tampa) in the 6A state semifinals.

Madison County 18, Union County 7

Union County’s bid for an upset of 3-time defending state champion Madison County came up short.  The Tigers had a 7-6 lead entering the fourth quarter, but the Cowboys rallied and advanced with an 18-7 win.
