Eastside, GHS advance to regional semifinals

The only local boys soccer teams to survive the regional quarterfinal round played at Gainesville’s Citizens Field on Wednesday.

No. 2 seed Eastside (Gainesville) opened the evening with a 3-2 win over No. 7 seed Suwannee (Like Oak) in the Class 4A-Region 1 bracket.

Matthew Bishop-Gylys, Nio Suzuki and Nico Hincapie scored the Rams’ (10-4-2) goals and Eastside will play No. 6 seed Bishop Kenny(Jacksonville) (14-8-1) on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the regional semifinals.

In the second game at Citizens Field, top-seeded Gainesville (14-0-2) edged No. 8 Gateway (Kissimmee), 2-1, in the Class 5A-Region 2 bracket. The Hurricanes will meet No. 5 New Smyrna Beach on Saturday at 7 p.m.

In the Class 3A-Region 1 quarterfinals, No. 3 seed P.K. Yonge (Gainseville) fell in overtime 2-1 to visiting No. 6 Florida High (Tallahassee). The Blue Wave finish the season 19-2-1.

No. 7 seed Williston (15-4-2) fell 4-0 on the road to No. 2 seed Pensacola Catholic in the Class 3A-Region 1 quarterfinals.

No. 8 seed Oak Hall (Gainesville) lost at top-seeded St. Johns Country Day (Orange Park), 8-0, in the Class 2A-Region 1 bracket. The Eagles ended the season at 8-4.
