Sports beat: Hawthorne wins district title at the buzzer

It was a tough night for No. 1 seeds in Friday night’s area district championship games.

Top seeds Williston, Eastside, Columbia (Lake City), and Bell were all district runners-up.

Dre Lawrence hit a jumper with 1.3 seconds to play to give No. 2 seed Hawthorne a 56-54 win at top seed Williston in the Class 1A-District 7 championship game on Friday night.

Lawrence finished with 27 points for the defending 1A state champions.

Hawthorne (12-9), which is ranked ninth in Class 1A by MaxPreps, will host Vanguard (Lake Wales) in a regional semifinal on Thursday, Feb. 18, while fifth-ranked Williston (14-9) will travel to 1A No. 2 Wildwood.

No. 3 seed Santa Fe defeated top seed Eastside for the second time this season.

The Raiders edged the Rams, 41-40, for the 4A-District 5 title at Legacy Park in Alachua, breaking Eastside’s 17-game win streak.

Eastside (20-2) will travel to The Villages next week, while Santa Fe will host Central (Brooksville).

In Class 3A-District 3, No. 2 seed P.K. Yonge defeated St. Joseph Academy in St. Augustine, 42-29, to win the district title.
